Joined Jul 29, Messages According to the manual, the fax machine should detect it when a call is an incoming fax and then cut off the answering machine the answering machine is connected via an output line coming from the fax machine. If the incoming call is not a fax then it simply allows the call to go through where the answering machine can pick it up.
The big confusion comes when the manual doesn't say anything about how many rings it recommends setting either the fax machine or the answering machine to pick up on. The fax machine allows 1, 2, 3 or 5 rings and the answering machine allows 2, 4 or 6 rings before picking up.
Now my father believed that the fax machine could detect whether the incoming call was a fax without picking it up, however if we set it to answer in less rings than the answering machine then the caller hears the answering machine pick up after 2 rings and gets a fax machine tone so not only is the fax machine failing to correctly identify the incoming call as a not being a fax but it isn't allowing the call to go through.
So we are assuming that his assumption was incorrect. On the other hand, if we set the answering machine to pick up before the fax machine then the fax machine never gets to the required number of rings so that it can assess whether the incoming call is a fax or not.
So does anyone know why the two products would almost intentionally make matching the number of rings before picking up impossible? Is there some fact that we're making false assumptions about? Does the fax machine have to answer the call to detect if the incoming call is a fax or not? Can this particular fax machine answer after 5 rings even if the answering machine picks up in 4 rings? Testing the units with the answering machine set to answer after 4 rings and the fax machine answering after 5 rings allowed a test fax from faxzero.
Any reason why one fax would go through and another wouldn't? Any solid answers would help tons. Joined Dec 8, Messages Based on what I read in the Dell manual I would say the answering machine needs to pick up the line first so the number of rings to answer for the answering machine needs to be less than the rings for the printer if you set the answer machine to pick on on the second ring set the printer for 3 rings.
Looks like the Dell listens for this tone, if it sees it then it is supposed to cut off the answer machine and complete its fax function, if the tone is not present the Dell should let the answer machine work normally.
